The press collaboration 'Translations from drawing to building', contained in the book 'Translations from Drawing to Buildling and Other Essays', a collection of essays written by Robin Evans, says that sketches and models are pretty much closer to painting or sculpture than a drawing could be to a building. Doing architectural drawings, the architect gets an ending object, while the artist obtains a final result through the manipulation of the object at the end of the process. Many paintings done by William Turner could be considered as skecthes, even when some of his delicate stain painting give us an open world of suggestions. What's near by Santa Maria della Salute in this picture?

Many volumes escort the principal figure of the picture behind the masts of ships. You really want to know what kind of ships are, and travelling right now to Venice, check all that stuff suggested by the effect of a stain painting. Deleuze, in 'Pintura. El concepto de diagrama' (Painting. The concept of diagram), explains the fireball of the picture 'Light and Colour' done by William Turner as a kind of stain painting done with what he calls 'the catastrophe in the heart of the act of painting'. During the first moment, the huge fireball catches the attention of the viewer thanks to the darker yellow spot located in the center left. And only afterwards, the look goes to the ocher and indigo stains that follows the light focus. What are each of those stains? Human heads? Corpses? Sedimentary rocks after the drag done by the deluge?

These two diagonals -ocher, indigo -losing strength as they approach to the focus, wrap a figure that seems to resurgence in the center of the picture: Moses writing the Book of Genesis.

But is another Turner who I want to talk, Arthur Turner, great American watercolorist (Houston, 1940 -). On May 2013, Moody Gallery presented his latest work called 'Roundels and Totems'. If I mention him is because the tensions, transparency and mild contacts that he creates in circular movements, that remind me the other -british- Turner. And these stain paintings easily drives the imagination of any architect into spaces not created yet.

Managing wet on wet, the texan artist creates rings with what it seems are some veins running to nourish them. Some zooms show us the way in which the meeting happen, if the meeting happens.

TURNER, Arthur - Roundel Series 105.

These rings vibrating on the canvas remember me the story titled 'The Disk', written by Borges, and particularly when he writes 'is the Disk of Odin has only one side. In the Earth, there is nothing that has only one side'.

Somehow, it seems that SANAA could take this Borge's Disk and reinterpret with volumes the short story in the Glass Pavilion (Toledo Museum of Art): where a number of concatenated glass bubbles into two broad contours that define major part of the building, are connected to each other through successive accesses. The rule only is breaking in the complementary areas - food area and enclosed courtyard-, indicated in color on the attached plan. The absence of hierarchy postulates, links the Pavilion with the Modern Architecture defended by De Stijl (balanced relationship by opposing equivalent elements) or Mies vand der Rohe (homogenous and isotropic space).

I try to express this absence of hierarchies in the watercolor shown below, where the side pieces, similar, are protecting a third one that does not organize the whole, floating all of them in a blue magma that would allow an independently way to work.

New York sways me

The lattice network in the Alishan Tourist Routes Bridge (Reiser + Umemoto, 2003), as soon is a cover or a board, structure or finally an screen. A kind of Educatorium at the University of Utrecht, where Koolhaas takes away the boundaries between floor, wall and ceiling, but only structural in the bridge.

Reiser + Umemoto. Alishan Tourist Routes.

Alishan Bridge does not get anywhere. Why should reach somewhere? Do you have always to reach? Where? It is a viewpoint. Is it the whole, or merely its ending?

In the Unazaki Meditation Hall (1993) projected by Enric Miralles, the integration of the viewpoint in one side of the old Omokage Bridge with a small park path creates the project, as an aspiration to be integrated with its surroundings. The architect uses two design strategies: attach the performance to the mountain, and a free interpretation of bamboo, used here as a tubular structure. The intention is a percivible object, lost -on the other hand- within the japanese lush vegetation.

Octavia City is going to fall at any time, hold with ropes, chains and catwalks to the crests of two steep mountains, as if the city was somehow a bridge. Under the interstices of wooden beams, at hundreds of feet below, Marco Polo says that it is only a cliff. The etching created by the artist Corradi Brannigan, shows us the delicate balance that it is near to fall apart.

In this other imagined city, we do not know if the bridge will withstand much more. It does not matter at all. May be it will break before crossing, or while we are crossing it. Who knows what. The man's fragility, the anonymous, the ability to watch the same city faded in the background.

Nueva York - South Street Seaport

The South Street Seaport Docks overhead view, near the Brooklyn Bridge, is a stranger at south of Manhattan, "stacked freedoms" as it was stated by Koolhaas in Delirious New York.  But in this case, horizontally freedoms.

Repeated and later on quadruplicated, the docks seems to be together, sharing the great space surrounding the New York Central No. 31 office box, built in wooden boards; it reminds the old cabin at the Miami Gusman Theatre, actually renamed Olympia. If the elevator passed from being a mechanical machine, as Koolhaas said in his essay, to become a functional and spatial device, this box office seems to link us to that other place that could perfectly be Grosvenor Island, Ellis Island or Liberty Island.

In Smaragdine, Calvino's aquatic city, streets and canals are overlap, joined by stairways. Harbor City, meander and access. If you trace the paths, the straightest line would be a zig-zag, and its representation an endless colored lines, hung in the air, some of them waiting to mark the flight of swallows. The immediate association with the Frente Marítimo de Benidorm (2009), projected by OAB, is recurrent: two levels-hard in the top, with a couple of subtle routes generated with urban furniture, the bottom level soft- offer an alternative ride. The beach invasion molds the sinuous shape of the limit, making an organic barrier that establish somekind of dialogue with the waves, and remind us a reminiscent of a cliff formed by the erosion of waves.

In the following watercolor, I imagine a city like Smaragdine in an afternoon of Labor Day: at a high speed, the oriental merchandise is being landed. Soon, the bazaars of the nearby Chinatown will be filled.

While a diagram, as Peirce and Deleuze said, 'is the relationship between matter report / unorganized and informal functions not / without end', the mapping could be defined as the complex relationship / interaction between numerous data, aesthetically attractive represented, effective represented (author's definition) pursuing the emotions of the viewer. Sometimes they will be purely artistic representations, looking more to show a worrying than the data itself.

I do think that Invisible Cities, written by Italo Calvino are multiply connected, connection that as far as I understand could be a ring whose origin is Venice, city in which the reader returned along the pages read, and maybe never he could come off. The above topographic map, to call it in some way, is generated with a range of ocher and similar yellows to the watercolor background, obtaining some plausibility to the locations and distances between Venice and its satellites.

Ira

Anger is the chaos of passion that maybe Jackson Pollock tried to catch in his 'Number 31' painting. Again thirty-one, as Acoustic Walden photography entitled 'New York Central N. 31', included in 'New York - Soth Street Seaport' in this blog.  What does this figure hide?

The irritation observed in Invisible Cities, written by Italo Calvino is again drawn, scaling size and the intensity of the bright color to represent these feeling. The purple complements and ends announcing the transgression, the destruction. The opposite direction of watered ink and computer lines reflects the violence contained in the mapping.

Lujuria

Invisible Cities, written by Italo Calvino, is an ekphrasis from objects imagined by Marco Polo when he wants to described their particulars to Kublai Khan. The nine chapters are developed in a symmetrical manner: the first and the ninth chapters have ten stories, while there are and only five in the rest of the book. The conversation hold between Polo and Khan is written with italics before the sequence of the stories. Calvino, belonging to Oulipo Group, seeks new ways to find original literary forms and structures applying restrictions -the restrictions are used also by architects to find new approaches-.

Oulipo brings together two apparently antagonist disciplines such as mathematics and literature, something that happens also in Architecture, where the programmatic and geometric is hardly rethought again with the help of a computer system.Writers like Perec, Quenau, Cortazar or Duchamp were prominent members of the Oulipo Group. The qualitiy of their literature could, somehow, support the process investigated by them. There are many deductions or critics of thi style; Suma Magazine has issued ninecollaborations (could it be a coincidence with the nine chapters of the book?) written by Miguel Alberti Palmer, trying to deduct the mathematics contained in several stories included in Invisible Cities.

I create a theorical Meetings Mapping from the direct or suggested sex mentions in certain cities, measuring the relations depending on the day of the week and the climatic temperature of locations.
